The city of Winnipeg raised the national flag of the Dominican Republic in commemoration of the 181st anniversary of National Independence.

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, February 27, 2025. – In the city of Winnipeg, province of Manitoba, dozens of Dominicans gathered to witness the raising of their tricolor flag in honor of the celebration of the 181st anniversary of their national independence. The event was organized by the Dominican Alliance in Manitoba, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and supporting the Dominican community living in this province, located in central Canada, and took place at the city’s Municipal Hall.

It is a tradition for the Dominican Republic to celebrate its most important national holiday, and each year, more Dominicans, no matter where they are in the world, proudly celebrate their Dominican identity.

Keeping the Dominican flag flying alongside the Canadian flag is a significant milestone for the Dominican community, symbolizing the appreciation and respect of Canadian councilors who, for the third year, have allowed a piece of Quisqueya to shine brightly in their municipal palace.

In addition to keeping the Dominican flag flying, Winnipeg also made history by illuminating two iconic landmarks with the vibrant colors of the national flag: the Esplanade Riel Bridge and the famous Winnipeg sign at The Forks were adorned with the blue, white, and red tones to celebrate the independence of the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Alliance, with its board of directors composed of Sabina Hutchinson, Lisbeth Aragones, Lesdia Rodriguez, Ojandi Jimenez, Kelvin Jimenez, and Domingo Capois, along with the special collaboration of Ali Hashmi, Board Chair of the Alliance, is committed to keeping the tradition of celebrating Dominican independence alive each year. They expressed gratitude for Winnipeg’s demonstration of inclusion toward this Quisqueyan community residing in this part of the country, which supports and contributes to professional and labor growth.
